As a baseball fan first and foremost, I knew the name Red Auerbach without really knowing the man or the role he played in professional sports. Since the former Boston Celtics coach/GM passed away last Saturday at 89, I've seen a lot written about him and his impact on the NBA. Evidently, he practically created it, and he definitely hastened its racial integration.
Auerbach is also supposed to have been the guy who first said, "Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser." That sounds similar to Vince Lombardi's "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." Except that saying never quite made sense to me, plus it sounds too harsh, as if he were talking about a battle. Auerbach's saying sounds more like a humorous quip, and fits a little better with the idea of playing games.
